Michael Barry
MICHAEL BARRY
KM, BSc, MA, MITD, FRSA

Michael Barry is Dean and Senior Lecturer in Industrial Relations and Sociology in the School of Business and Humanities, National College of Ireland. He has worked at the college for the past 26 years. He was educated at Brunel University (West London) from which he holds a BSc(Hons) in Sociology and an MA in Sociology and Law. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and of the Royal Anthropological Institute.

Liam Doherty
LIAM DOHERTY - Treasurer
B.A. (Mod), M.A.

Liam is Managing Director of Ask HR Ltd, a private consultancy company specialising in the management of large scale Industrial Relations and Human Resource change projects. He was formerly a Director, of the Industrial Relations and Human Resources Division in IBEC.

Liam has a BA (Mod) in Economics and Industrial Relations from Trinity College Dublin and a MA in Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations from Keele University. He is a member of the FAS Excellence Through People Approvals Board, and the Board of the European Foundation. He has published “Developing Competitive Advantage Through Teamworking” and “Innovation in Human Resource Management”. He is currently a visiting Research Associate with The Queen’s University, Belfast.

 
Liam Doran
LIAM DORAN
B.A. M.A.

Liam Doran is both a Registered General Nurse and a Registered Nurse for Intellectual Disability. He holds a BA in Health Administration and an MA in HRM and Industrial Relations. Liam was appointed General Secretary of the INO, in October 1998, and had previously served in a number of other positions with the INO since his appointment, as Student Officer, in 1983. Since his appointment Liam has been the lead negotiator in all national level negotiations, on behalf of Nurses and Midwives, and involved the negotiations around the 1999 national dispute and the more recent negotiations on benchmarking. Liam is also a member of the ICTU Executive Council and is involved in the negotiations with regard to social partnership agreements.

John Douglas
JOHN DOUGLAS

Educated at Saint Laurence's College Dublin, attended TCD, left before completing degree. Born and living in Bray Co. Wicklow. John first became interested in the Trade Union Movement through his father and mother both of whom were shop stewards. Joined the Irish National Union Of Vintners, Grocers and Allied Trades Assistants as a junior official in 1979 becoming General Secretary in 1993 and on the amalgamation in 1994 of this union with the Irish Distributive Administrative Trade Union to form Mandate Trade Union. John became its first National Official with responsibly for Industrial Relations. In 1995 became General Secretary of Mandate Trade Union. John is a member of the Executive Council of the ICTU.

Kevin Duffy
KEVIN DUFFY - Vice Chair
Barrister at Law.

Kevin was appointed Chairman of the Labour Court in December 2003, having served as Deputy Chairman since 1997. Prior to that he was Assistant General Secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions since 1988, with responsibility for industrial relations and trade union organisation.
Before taking up the position of Assistant General Secretary of the ICTU, Kevin was General Secretary of the Ancient Guild of Incorporated Brick and Stonelayers’ and Allied Trades Union (now part of the Building and Allied Trades Union).

Kevin has been a member of the Labour Relations Commission, the Civil Service Arbitration Board and the Board of FÁS.
Emer Gilvarry
EMER GILVARRY
B.C.L (UCD, 1979)

Emer is head of the litigation and human resources groups with Mason, Hayes and Curran. Her practice primarily involves dispute resolution in contentious employment and partnership issues. She also conducts litigation for corporates and insurers in the defence of employer liability claims, health & safety and environmental issues. In addition, Emer leads a team which provides corporate compliance and due diligence support in employment and work place related issues. Emer has lectured extensively on aspects of issues relating to the workplace. Emer is also a qualified mediator.

She is noted as a recommended lawyer in the international directories Who's Who Legal and Dispute Resolution, and a member of the Irish Society for Labour Law.
Mary Keating
MARY KEATING - Chair
B.A.(Psy), M.A. MSc.

Mary is the Director of Undergraduate Studies, School of Business Studies at Trinity College and is a Senior Lecturer in Human Resource Management. She has extensive consulting experience and has research and published on Human Resource Management, International HRM and on cross-cultural management and leadership.
She is a member of the worldwide research network GLOBE Programme, and a Fellow of the Salzburg Seminar and of the Institute for International Integration Studies at TCD, in 2004 she published (with co-author Gillian Martin) an edited volume entitled “Managing Cross-Cultural Business Relations: The Irish-German Experience”.

Martin King
MARTIN KING - Secretary
MBA (DCU 1997) Ph.D (TCD 2007)

Martin is the founding member of the Ampersand Consulting Network, a management consulting group. Martin worked as a practitioner for over 20 years, initially with the IT&GWU and then as SIPTU’s first Dublin Private Sector Regional Secretary. He was awarded an MBA by DCU in 1997, the Sir Charles Harvey Award in business management postgraduate studies by the IMI in 1998, and a Ph.D by TCD in 2007. Martin is a member of the Adjunct Faculty of the School of Business, Trinity College where he lectures in HR and Industrial Relations. His ongoing research interests are in the areas of ‘organisational trust’ and ‘exit and voice’.

Martin is frequently asked to advise on business change initiatives and to facilitate resolutions to trade disputes. He has been involved in a number of significant cases since the establishment of his consultancy practice in 1996.
Lynda Murphy
LYNDA MURPHY

Lynda is Director of People, Performance and Development in Royal Sun Alliance. Her Human Resources knowledge has been gained over 24 years in the Financial Services Sector. In addition to leading the HR function of one of Ireland's major insurers, she serves as a pension schemes trustee, has managed HR aspects of mergers and acquisitions with the trade union and has tutored within the RSA Group on International Management Development programmes. She is keenly interested in leadership development and employee/industrial relations and is currently completing a post graduate diploma in Executive Coaching and Business Mentoring.

Jack O'Connor
JACK O’CONNOR

Jack O'Connor is General President of SIPTU since 2003. He previously served as Vice President from 2000, and was elected by the Union's 200,000 approx members. Prior to this he served as the Union's Regional Officer in the Midlands and South East from 1990. He has been a Member of the Executive Council of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions since July 2001 and a member of its key General Purposes Committee since September 2003. He is also Chairperson of the Congress Private Sector Committee. He was involved in the negotiation of the PPF Agreement in 2000 and played a key role in the negotiation of the Sustaining Progress Agreement at the end of 2002 into 2003, and in the review of that Agreement in June 2004

Anthony O'Reilly
ANTHONY O’REILLY

A graduate (’90 BA Econ/Hist) of Brown University in Rhode Island, USA and Clongowes Wood College (’85). Chief Executive of Providence Resources Plc, an AIM and Dublin listed oil & gas company, since September 2005, having served as a founding director since its incorporation in 1997. Previously, (2001–2005) he held the position of Chief Executive of Wedgwood, part of the Waterford Wedgwood Group. He also served as Chairman of ARCON International Resources, a Dublin and London listed mining company, (having been its Chief Executive from 1996 to 2001) until April 2005. In the early 90’s, he worked in mergers and acquisitions at Dillon Read (London) and in corporate finance at Coopers and Lybrand (New York), advising natural resource companies.

He is a non-executive director of Independent News & Media, Lundin Mining Corp., Fitzwilton Ltd and a number of other companies. He is a former Chairman of the Irish Youth Foundation and is a Trustee of the O’Reilly Foundation.
David Parkinson
DAVID PARKINSON

David has spent virtually his entire carer in Employee Relations and Human Resource Management and as a senior director in a multinational environment.

His earlier experience was with Motor Distributors and the Unilever companies, HB Ice Cream and Birds Eye Frozen Foods. He joined Gilbeys of Ireland Group as Group HR Director (now part of Diageo) with HR responsibilities for the Gilbeys sales and marketing company based in Belfast and Dublin, the international marketing Company, R & A Bailey & Co., and the production operation in Dublin (and more recently in Belfast).

He has had extensive experience in business at senior director level in the development and execution of business strategy, organisation design and development, major change management, employee relations, business performance management and capability development. David is regarded as one of the most accomplished Human Resource specialists in Ireland.
Niall Saul
NIALL SAUL

Niall Saul is currently Group Head of HR and OD with the Irish Life & Permanent Group, which he joined in July 1997 from Waterford Crystal, where he was HR Director. Niall has over 20 years’ experience in the areas of HRM, OD, IR and Change Management. This has included extensive experience leading and supporting major organisational change / business turnaround projects in a wide range of business sectors. His career includes senior HR management positions in the Banking / Financial Services, European Automotive, Construction, Retail and Electronics industries. He has worked in consultancy posts in the IR area with the FIE (now IBEC) and the IPC.

His particular areas of interest are the role of the HR in turnaround / survival situations, the Management of Change, the creation of "competitively focused" organisations, and the development of competence based approaches to performance management. Niall is an advocate of HR as strategic enterprise business partner. He is also interested in the development of partnership models for the management of change. Niall is a Fellow of the CIPD and holds a Masters Degree in Change Management, (HEC/INSEAD). He is an adjunct professor of National College of Ireland, Chairman of the Human Resource and Social Policy Committee of IBEC and a board member of Skillnets.
Brian Sheehan
BRIAN SHEEHAN
B.A. (UCD 1977), M. Comm (UCD 1996)

Brian Sheehan has been Editor of Industrial Relations News (IRN) since 1986. He previously worked as a reporter with the weekly subscription magazine, which is valued by employment relations professionals for its independence, reliability and insight. Brian also worked as a freelance journalist, contributing a weekly industrial column for a number of years in the business pages of the former Evening Press newspaper. Brian has contributed a number of articles to academic journals, including the special commemorative book to mark the University of Limerick sponsored John Lovett Lecture series (2002). Brian graduated from UCD in 1977 with an Honours degree in History & Politics and completed an M.Comm at the UCD Business School in 1996 on ‘Crisis, Strategic Re-Evaluation and the Re-Emergence of Tripartism in Ireland’.
